Major awards Ban has received in his career include the 3rd Kansai Architect Grand Prize of the Japan Institute of Architecture (JIA) in 1996, the JIA Prize for Best Young Architect of the Year in 1997 the Architectural Institute of Japan 18th Tohoku Architecture Prize in 1998, ar+d award frin the Architectural Review in 1999 and the Berlin Art Award in 2000.

As an author, he has published "Shigeru ban" (GG portfolio, Editorial Gustavo Gili, 1997), "Ban Shigeru"(JA Vol.30, Shin Kenchiku Sha, 1998) and "Paper Tube Architecture from Kobe to Rwanda"(Chikuma Shobo,1998), "Shigeru Ban, Projects In Process"(TOTO Shuppan, 1999)
