Michael Graves Exhibition October 19 - November 19, 2000 at Weston Hall Gallery

The Language of Michael Graves, Architecture and Product Design

Beginning October 19th, 2000, NJIT will host a month-long retrospective of the work of world-renowned architect Michael Graves. This exhibit will be held at the Main Gallery of the New Jersey School of Architecture, Weston Hall, 367 MLK Boulevard in Newark, New Jersey. The retrospective will close on November 19, 2000.

A gala benefit will be held on the evening of October 18th (by invitation only), featuring a lecture by Graves and specially designed posters and limited edition prints commemorating the exhibit. Proceeds from the sales will benefit the New Jersey School of Architecture Scholarship Endowment.

Beyond his work as an architect, Graves is an award-winning designer of elegant interiors, furnishings, and objects for the home. The exhibit will include drawings and models of buildings designed by Graves, as well as art pieces, and items from his various home product lines. Recently honored as one of the Seven Designers Who Changed our World, Graves received the President's National Medal of Arts Award in 1999. Graves reaffirmed his role as a national figure when he dressed the Washington Monument in scaffolding that was so spectacular that lawmakers considered passing a law to keep it.

This free exhibit which will be open to the public recognizes the long-standing relationship between the university and Graves. In 1991, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from NJIT for his contribution to the world of design. His work at NJIT includes Laurel Hall, the newest residence, and a master plan to unify the design of the campus.
