Telecommunications and the City of the 21st Century
Throughout history, new urban infrastructures have transformed the functioning and spatial organization of cities. We have, for example, seen the effects of railroads, freeways, electrical grids, and telegraph and telephone networks. Today, new telecommunications networks constitute the latest wave of this process. This lecture -- based upon William Mitchell's latest books City of Bits and E-topia -- will explore the effects of digital telecommunications upon cities and discuss the architectural, urban design, and planning challenges that these effects raise.
